5 Ways to Reduce Plastic in Your Life
Every year millions of plastic bags end up in landfills and our oceans. According to a recent report by the World Economic Forum, our oceans will contain more plastic than fish by 2050. Here are a few ways to help make it easier for you to reduce plastic in your life.
1. Bring your own shopping bag
Keep reusable bags in your car, store them in a visible position in your house and always remember to take them with you when you head out. Treat yourself to a reusable bag that brings you joy.
2. Stop buying bottled water
Unless there’s some kind of contamination crisis, plastic water bottles are an easy target for
reducing waste. Instead, keep a refillable bottle handy.
3. Bring your own thermos to the coffee shop
Disposable coffee cups might look like paper, but they’re usually lined with polyethylene, a type of plastic resin. Then there are lids, stirrers, and splash sticks—which can all be avoided with your own mug.
4. Re-think your food storage
There is a reason why your grandmother stored her food in linen. Did you know linen is anti- microbial? When you replace your plastic storage with linen you are not only reducing plastic – but you are keeping your food fresh longer.
5. Shop your local farmers market
Farmers markets are a great way to buy fresh, local produce without plastic, as long as you remember to bring your own bags. And when buying little things like berries and cherry tomatoes, you can bring your own container and hand the plastic basket back to the vendor to reuse.
