Who We Are
Kitchen Garden Textiles was founded by Heidi Barr, a dancer turned costume designer. She was inspired to begin this work by urban farmers in her hometown of Philadelphia.
Strong relationships with a sew shop in Allentwon and several freelance seamtresses in Philadelpia keep the shop stocked with textiles crafted ethically in Pennsylvania.
Wanting to keep everyting local led Heidi to the shocking truth that there is no linen fabric produced in the United States. Not deterred, she co-founded the Pa. Flax Project with Emma De Long of kneehigh farm and began the work to rebuild a regional flax to linen supply chain.
Initiatives
The latin origins of collaborate mean “to labor together” and through collaboration we deepen our impact and lighten our burdens.
Judy Wicks Activist, Author & Founder, The White Dog Cafe
"The wonderful linen storage bags from Kitchen Garden Textiles play an essential role in my refrigerator, keeping my lettuce, celery and other produce fresh and moist. I have at least three in use at any time. How did I ever manage without them?!!"
Megan Oglevie, Farm Ambassador
A few words about the linen coffee filters from KGT. "I’m a coffee snob ever since working as a barista at a small, local shop many years ago.... So, along comes a product that is made from linen(!), that I feel *GOOD* about using for my daily dose of caffeinated bliss. Working in sustainability, I’m keyed into products that align with my ethics. Thank you for taking away my guilt for all the paper filters I won’t be using from here on out!"
